Sooner or later you will hand a child a VHS tape, and you will watch a very specific expression cross their face: the dawning realisation that this heavy plastic rectangle is, somehow, a film. What follows is a delicate cultural exchange. Proceed with patience.
They will try to swipe it. They will turn it over looking for a screen. They may attempt to pinch to zoom on the label. This is normal. To them, a film is a glowing surface you touch, and you have just handed them a brick. Do not laugh. They are doing their best.
Now break the news gently, one blow at a time:
They will not believe you. You will say 'we had to rewind our entertainment' and they will look at you the way you once looked at a grandparent describing a party line telephone. Accept this. You are now the old one. It happened faster than you would like.
End the lesson by letting them press EJECT. The satisfying mechanical clunk is the one part they will genuinely enjoy, and honestly, so will you. Some things survive the generations after all.
